Writing Assignment Italian Film 1. Consider the role of religion/spirituality in both Rossellini's and De Sica's films. How are they portrayed on the screen? Are they represented similarly or not? Use specific scenes to support your argument.

In Rossellini's and De Sica's films, the role of religious and spirituality are represented differently with different portray. The essay will make an attempt to understand the portrayal with respect to the films. The movie “The Bicycle Thief” depicts the world after World War II in 1948. The story depicts a family that is affected by the war. There is a scene where the son and father are hungry but due to a shortage of money the father is unable to pay for both and so the son takes food (). The movie talks about a family that is crushed not only financially but also spiritually and emotionally affected. The story has the main character that gets the job of posting a movie wall poster and for that purpose, he must have a bicycle. But the bicycle is stolen on the first day and the father and the son duo goes on a hunt in search of the bicycle and it ends in familiar. They are portrayed in a not glamorised manner with the camera (Neorealism: Exemplified by the Film the Bicycle Thief, 2015). This has given me a chance to see Italy the way it is. Because the life and landscape of Italy were affected by war. The very opening scene of the movie portrays a city filled with loneliness and anger. In Old City, Pina’s death sequence has depicted the emotional and dramatic buildup. The filmmakers have portrayed the has incorporated the role of humiliation and have clearly portrayed outraged Roman. Pietro says that “I am a Catholic priest and I believe that a man who fights for justice and liberty walks in the pathways of the Lord- and the pathways of the Lord are infinite” (Roberto Rossellini, n.d.). The emotion is shown while saying this dialogue. The involvement can be seen in the editing, and closeups as that increase the emotional experience. There is a scene where pina is shot down as she tries to run after a truck carrying her fiancé (Rossellini, 2021). The movie is pessimistic in nature and involves a new style of filmmaking that is different from Bicycle Thieves. This movie draws reference to fascism. The movie has employed crosscutting and parallel editing to showcase the Nazis climbing the staircase in the building of Pina and it is compared with the Marcello descending with Romoletto’s weapons. In this, the editing is switched back and forth. This adds effect in both spiritual and emotional manner.
